For this week's assignment, I asked ChatGPT to write a short blog post on the federal legality of marijuana within the United States. My prompt to ChatGPT was: “In 250 words, describe marijuana’s current legal status federally.” The level of precision in ChatGPT’s response to this prompt is surprising. It stated that although marijuana is legal within many states both medicinally and recreationally, it is actually a controlled Schedule I drug under federal law due to the federal Controlled Substances Act. I was also surprised that it correctly stated that there were ongoing efforts to reschedule marijuana. When I moved this text into Google Docs and enabled Suggesting Mode, I primarily made style and grammar corrections. I reworded a couple of sentences to clarify the meaning, and I inserted hyperlinks to reputable sources, including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services. This exercise demonstrated to me how tools like ChatGPT can aid in getting started on a topic, but they require human review to ensure factual accuracy, tone, and credible sourcing. Although this AI model provided valuable information, it lacked source information and occasionally stated ideas awkwardly. ChatGPT is more of a research assistant than a reliable source of information. This tool helps brainstorm ideas and may assist with initial drafts, but it is not intended for final submissions.
